- Muros hosts the second launching of the “Cardboard Boat Adventure” 2025 program, promoted by the Asociación Educación Azul (Blue Education Association).
STUDENTS FROM THE SANTA APOLONIA SCHOOL OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA SAIL THE ESTUARY OF MUROS IN THEIR CARDBOARD BOAT
Secondary school students from Santa Apolonia School of Santiago de Compostela participated in the construction of the cardboard boat and tomorrow they will set sail in the Muros estuary, in the second launching of the 2025 edition of this project, promoted by the Asociación Educación Azul (Blue Education Association).
After much teamwork and many seafaring dreams shared throughout this school year, the students will embark tomorrow to sail in the Ría de Muros, culminating their project to build a boat with recycled cardboard. This educational project combines sustainability, STEAM skills, and teamwork, and aims to bring the maritime world closer to the youngest.
Throughout the course, the students have designed and built their boat -based on recycled materials, mainly reused cardboard- with the help of their teachers and nautical experts, learning concepts of physics, engineering and ecology... but, above all, learning to cooperate and dream. The project was completed this morning when the boat demonstrated its buoyancy with the young sailors on board who propelled the vessel with oars, also made by themselves with sustainable materials.
San Sebastian, yesterday, hosted the first of the launchings that will take place until June 6 and that will call at Muros (A Coruña), Avilés, Ribadesella and Madrid.
This educational initiative is part of Educación Azul's commitment to bring the maritime world closer to young people and encourage new vocations around the sea. Barcos de Cartón integrates the principles of the STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and promotes values such as teamwork, reuse of materials, collaborative learning and respect for the natural environment.
In addition to its pedagogical benefits, the project contributes to environmental awareness by encouraging reuse and recycling, and aligns with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as quality education, gender equality, climate action and ocean conservation.
