Welcome and handover of a ‘Logbook’ with basic diagrams
Rigging Workshop: Before boarding, participants are taught the art of essential knots: the bowline, the clove hitch and the figure-of-eight knot. It’s not just about practice; it’s about understanding why these knots have kept ships safe for centuries.
Cast Off: Under the skipper’s supervision, participants learn to set sail
Once out on the open sea, the physical and coordinated work begins under the skipper’s supervision
• Hoisting the Mainsail: Participants are divided into roles. Some ‘hunt’, others guide the sail. It is time to feel the weight of the wind and the strength needed to master it.
• Trim and Course: Learning the importance of aerodynamics. How do you adjust the sail to make the most of every gust?
Tacking and Jibing
The boat becomes a moving classroom, a living classroom
“Ready to tack!” Participants must coordinate to change the jib over to the other side and shift their weight to balance the list.
Sailing on different courses (close-hauled, beam reach and broad reach), understanding the relationship between the shipyard’s design and the boat’s response to the waves.
Anchoring manoeuvres
